
The Museum of Science & Industry
The Museum of Science & Industry installed a German U-Boat as a permanent new exhibit. The decision was made to place the submarine underground. The U-505 is the only German Submarine in the United States, and is now a memorial to the 55,000 sailors who gave their lives on the high seas in WWI and WWII. We supplied the soldier pile lagging to support the excavation for the new submarine exhibit.

The Dan Ryan Expressway
The Dan Ryan Expressway is the life blood of Chicago in terms of transportation. This job required major bridge repair as well as on and off ramp reconstruction for over 10 miles of highway. We supplied the soldier pile lagging that supported the reconstruction of the Dan Ryan Expressway as well as shielding for the major bridge reconstruction efforts. The job took 3 years and required a combination of Dense Hardwood Lagging as well as Southern Yellow Pine Lagging.

Minnesota Power's Boswell Energy Center
Minnesota Power's Boswell Energy Center Sterling supplied crane mats for the $200 million environmental retrofit at Minnesota Power's Boswell Energy Center in Cohasset. Other Minnesota Power Projects that require our products include wind power, hydro-electric, gas turbine, & coal. Minnesota Power generates power from a variety of sources, including coal, gas, biomass and wind, in locations from North Dakota to Lake Superior's North Shore.

Pepper Construction Company and Harrah's Entertainment
Pepper Construction Company and Harrah's Entertainment dreamed of constructing the largest floating facility in the United States. Six barges were joined together to create the 350,000 square foot foundation for the casino and convention center. Sterling Lumber provided 1,761 crane mats to protect the foundation decking. The mats were constructed and sourced in less than 12 weeks. Over 170 truckloads were scheduled for delivery in the span of just 8 business days to minimize the personnel and equipment costs of unloading.

British Petroleum teamed up with Husky Energy
British Petroleum teamed up with Husky Energy to excavate in excess of 10.6 billion barrels of bitumen in 2008. BP’s first ever oil sands project in the Canadian Oil Sands of Fort McMurray was an intensive job requiring 2,900 rig mats and over 600 access mats. Sterling Lumber was the sole supplier of Steel Framed Interlocking Rig Mats and fulfilled the needs of the project in 6 months.

Notre Dame University
The Notre Dame Football Stadium is one of the most well know sporting arenas in the country. While doing some interior repairs inside the stadium, it is very important to protect the field from damage. This is why Kreager Brothers turned to Sterling Lumber Company to rent Access Mats to provide access across the field. Sterling Lumber scheduled the delivery of 6 semi loads of matting and also managed on site shuttling of the mats into the stadium with a smaller truck that could fit inside the north access tunnel. The Client and University were very pleased with the service, the product, and the budget.
